The eight-month Laboratory Technician Program is designed to teach clinical and research laboratory procedures and techniques integrated with the principals of Life Sciences. Laboratory tests play an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases.
Medical Laboratory Technicians perform these tests under the supervision and direction of Pathologists (physicians who study the cause and nature of disease), Medical Doctors and scientists who specialize in laboratory sciences, also known as Medical Technologists. The Laboratory Technician Assistant Program is formatted into four modules and has a two month externship. Each module is approximately seven weeks in length.
Occupational Objective
After completion of this program the students will be qualified to sit for the National Certification Exam offered by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCALP). While this is not required by the state, most hospital/laboratory facilities do request the certification of prospective employees.
The students will be prepared to perform all back office laboratory procedures including sterilization, instrument quality control, hematology, chemistry, serology and microscopic investigation for microbiology tests including culture and sensitivities.
Class Schedule
Classes are offered in both morning and evening sessions. Upon completion of the course work, students are placed on a two-month externship in actual medical laboratories.
While every effort will be made to accommodate the student's schedule, most medical laboratories only accept students Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The externship is considered a mandatory part of the curriculum and may not be omitted from the program.
